It’s a title to uphold–to be labeled “The Coolest Girl in the World” all before the age of 21. Yet, Chloe Sevigny executes it effortlessly. Sevigny has had one of the most influential impacts in the fashion and entertainment industry throughout a three-decade timespan and does so in a wave of ripples: it’s a power she wields so subtly you don’t know how explosive she is until she’s passed you by.
After emerging from the underground and independent scene in the 90’s, Sevigny found herself almost immediately branded as an “it-girl” after being scouted at just 17-years-old when she was spotted in Sassy Magazine.
Stepping into fashion and entertainment, there was a certain naturalness and plainness to Chloe’s style. It’s what you’d see every day on random clothing racks but it’s how she molded clothes to herself, in her own comfortableness, whether it was jeans, a t-shirt, and some doc martens, or even a corduroy x denim number.
As she garnered success through roles in both successful and controversial independent films like 1995's Kids or her breakout role in 1999's Boys don’t Cry, Chloe Sevigny also started to solidify herself as a fashion icon both on the carpet and off in the 90s.
In both her films and in her style, the early to late 90’s saw an unorthodox Chloe Sevigny who wore what she wanted where she wanted between tiger-striped tights to varying layers and silhouettes.
A lot of her looks mimicked her often laid back demeanor and acting style. She describes her style as “Vintage Prairie,” in homage to her childhood tv-show, Little House on the Prairie.
Chloe’s appeal has never involved being touted as “sexy” or “bombshell” or even a “classic or all-american beauty.” Her allure has always lay in her elusiveness and not trying to be anything at all really. She stands out in her own category and continues to evolve and experiment through every period in her life.
The early 2000s saw Chloe at her height in both the fashion and entertainment world as she collected accolades and found herself behind the face of Miu Miu, Louis Vuitton, and Vivienne Westwood. Here, she played around with style in terms of hair and anything that exposed skin, involved mesh, or gave her a gracious, grecian, elongated look.
Today, Chloe Sevigny remains a force to be reckoned with as she’s starred in roles in franchises like American Horror Story, Russian Doll, or the limited-series The Act and movies such as Bones and All and Lizzie.
While the “Coolest Girl in the World” is spending time newly married and raising her first kid, her style remains cemented in her continuing legacy. These days, Chlose Sevigny sports bold cuts, triangle silhouettes, funky patterns and textures, all while maintaining a level of casual that’s still unique to her.
