Rihanna’s Reign
It’s no secret that Rihanna will go down in history as a fashion icon— no, legend. And if you don’t believe me, here are eight looks that are sure to change your mind. By: Darby Bell
Here she is in a vintage Dolce and Gabbana python bustier (2005), Jacquemus Fall/Winter lace-up pants (2021), and Loewe Fall/Winter longline coat (2021). This is one of my personal favorites, mostly because of the warm color scheme and use of texture. The snakeskin print catches the eye while blending with the deep brown exterior of the Loewe coat. All of which is brought together by the Jacquemus trousers. A lighter brown, with an unique waist that allows room for a pop of color while maintaining synergy with the rest of the outfit. *Chefs kiss*
2.Rihanna x Matrix = crossover of the century. Need I say more?
3.You know Rihanna is always going to show up and show out during NYFW. Here she is at the Edun Spring/Summer fashion show in 2015 wearing an Edun jacket, with a deep plunge, asymmetrical lapel, wide leg pants, and Manolo Blahnik heels. Jacquie Aiche, Ana Khouri, Jennifer Fisher, and Lynn Ban provided the necessary jewels. I had to showcase her chameleon abilities by highlighting this soft white fit because there aren’t many people who can go from The Matrix to this!
4.Scared of mixing feathers and fur? Don’t be because Rihanna tested it for you and it's a definite yes! She was spotted in vintage Gucci by Tom Ford jeans, custom Benny Andallo hat, and Fendi bag while shopping in L.A. Somehow, the fabric, print, and plumage work together to give off western chic in a way we never knew possible.
5.The patchwork denim and leopard jacket, camo baseball hat from Awake NY, Tom Ford heels, and Dior purse sound like a lot on paper. But work like a charm when put together. And if there is anything I learned from this look, it's that sandal straps belong over the pants… genius I tell you, genius.
6.Rihanna is reinventing maternity wear one look at a time. Or should I say with one monochromatic outfit at a time. I remember the day she had the audacity to step outside wearing this. It put the entire world at a standstill, and now people, pregnant or not, are trying to recreate the Jean Paul Gaultier, Jacquie Aiche, and Carharrt ensemble, and I can’t blame them. (P.s the black stirrups really steal the show.)
7.Three words: Simple, simple, simple. Every now and then Rihanna wears something that gives the rest of us hope. You may not pull off the denim and leopard print. But no one, and I mean no one, can look bad in an oversized sweater, with suede flare pants and a mini Louis Vuttion bag. Literally, no one.
8.You and I both know that this list wouldn’t be complete if I didn’t talk about this Guo Pei gown, worn by yours truly at the 2015 Met Gala. First, let me say that I AM A SUCKER FOR A CAPE WITH A TRAIN! I love the drama it brings to any and every event. Second, the jacquard fabric and fur trim is so gorgeous, it should be illegal. The yellow not only complements her skin, but it stands out against the red carpet and demands your attention. Rihanna, Guo Pei… y'all did what needed to be done!
