The 80s were a fascinating time in America, I mean you have Reagan as president which was ONE of the many awful things to have happened in history. You have the A.I.D.S crisis. The Central Park Five. The rise of technology as well as PUNK. There was so much happening during this time, and that caused a ripple effect on the clothing. When you look at the clothing you can’t help but think “what the fuck is going on” which was the same thing I kept on repeating while looking at what was happening during this era.
The 80s is often looked at as this goofy time in history, especially mostly because of its fashion it is often looked over because we think of it has cheesy, corny, and cringy as fuck. But just like life and the fashion trend cycle, everything always comes back, sometimes in ways we wouldn’t expect it to. There were many fashion icons that came out of this area. Grace Jones, Madonna, Denise Huxable (I am well aware that she is a fictional character but come on, her fashion is unmatched.)
The deeper dive that I did on 80s fashion; the more parallels that saw between then and now.
Socks go with everything, yes even with heels. This is something that surprised me was seeing so many socks with outfits which is something that has been always trending, but now more so than ever. Just like then, the socks and the shoe make the outfit.
Pattern clashing. Since 2020 the fashion trend cycle has gone so fast that we have gone through decades of fashion in a very short period of time. That now everything is trending all at once. So we are left with mixing patterns mixing silhouettes.
Blazers. Denise Huxtable the most stylish tv character to come out of the 80s. Denise Huxtable is played by the gorgeous and talented Lisa Bonnet, mother to the one and only Zoe Kravitz who is as equally talented and gorgeous as her mother. Denise is a character on the Cosby show, Denise is a rebellious, free-spirited, who's known for her eccentric clothing. As I was looking up her outfits I saw that she really utilized blazers. Blazers have always been around but in the 80s we started to see bigger blazers with shoulder pads. I feel as though Gigi Hadid has been nailing this oversized blazer look. Side note Sarah Jessica Parker was an 80s icon.
Chunky Jewelry/ Layered jewelry/ As well as crazy accessories. When you look at the 80s you can’t help but notice how people weren't afraid to layer jewelry as well as add pieces to their hair. We have seen ribbon in the hair, resin chunk rings from La Manso, silly jewelry from Susan Alexandra.
Baggy Clothing and colorful clothing.
The 80s were all about color and larger silhouettes. Which is something that we have seen much of over the years. I will say that although the silhouettes were larger they were also tailored very well to fit the person’s body.
